SOCON WEEK 10

Season has flown by for sure. This week’s slate features two meaningful games and two meaningless games.

1:30 FURMAN @ VMI Bottom feeder game #1. Loser has inside track to last place.
2:30 UTC @ WESTERN Essentially elimination game #1
3:00 ETSU @ MERCER Essentially elimination game #2
3:00 WOFFORD @ SAMFORD Bottom feeder game #2 With a loss WC still can finish last.
The elimination games are technically not that but a loss in this weeks game and a title is all but gone.

Shaping up as a race to the Bottom, and that's one I hope we don't win.

Scenarios:

Mercer: L to ETSU or Furman
Chatt: W over WCU and L to ETSU or Sam
ETSU: L to Mercer
WCU: L to Chatt or L to Sam

It's a new week after a much needed break. Let's get it together and run the table (VMI,WC,ETSU,Mercer). With very plausible help above, a Samford makeup game might be played and determine a share of the Conf Championship. Am I right?

with 4 games left, 5-2 is possible. All other teams have at least 1 lost. could get interesting. first up, VMI

Gonna need a flow chart, decision tree, and/or a spreadsheet to work all that out. That’s the kind of thing FUBeAR generally enjoys doing, but if FUBeAR did it, he couldn’t keep himself from adding (subjective or model-generated) probability weighting to the scenarios…which might make the entire exercise somewhat akin to the sound of one hand clapping…

AllTimeFU, doubtful it happens …. but it’s a very interesting thought exercise you propose because it would force the SoCon (Spartanburg I think, cough cough) to consider playing Furman vs Samford. But they couldn’t because that would be the first weekend of the playoffs - unless you mean just to get a piece of the Conference Title but NOT the FCS playoffs then sure that’s possible. What you propose would be crazy because you could end up with a team tying for the SoCon title during the first weekend of the postseason.

We could play Sammy on Wed before the playoffs. No big deal.

Cool. Let’s beat VMI this week ! Anyone watch any recent games of VMI? I’ve watched several non-Furman games but haven’t seen any VMI. Thus my surprise at the three-headed QB. Often a coach will say “when you have two QBs you don’t have a QB”. VMI has tried three

FIRST-No way in the world that would happen. SECOND-It won’t be necessary.

If the game remains unplayed then supporters of both schools can swear up & down their team would have won.

So it's really a win-win as it stands.

I think if we beat VMI and Wofford, which is entirely possible, we are sitting at 4-5 and have some momentum and something - a winning record - to play for.

That's what we need to look for over the next two games. As we have noted, we are going to play a lot of guys and learn a lot for next season over these next four.

And yes, I realize it could be a purely academic exercise, but if we win out and Samford beats Chatt and Western... I think that's five two loss teams on top of the league.

Interdasting.

Dave. I like it. my take is that I think the players learn from practice and games differently. After a while we’ve seen the same dudes and plays etc in practice. The guys know each other’s tendencies. Then we get to face different guys, skills and see different plays when we face a live opponent. They run some plays or schemes that we don’t run. I think an additional game would be good for a little development / improvement. Win or lose. Though I would hope we win !!

… I hate that we may not get to play a game but oh well

Can you lay that out in a chart … something like this…

Hatcher wouldn't get done arguing with the refs until Saturday, though.
