Scouting VMI

nothing much yet - just history here at first:

In the last TWENTY FIVE games vs VMI - (do note there was a gap as we did Not play them from 2003 - 2013) so since 1990 we are 21 - 2 in the last 23 games...

The two losses were both in Lexington - 2014 and 2020. We are in Lexington this year... but the reason I chose 1990 was that included all of the 90s which were not great years (until later with Bobby J) and yet we beat VMI in every year of the 90s. Basically we have only lost ONCE to them since 1990 in a non-COVID year. Once.

Back with more - would appreciate your thoughts !

I do know they gave Citadel a real battle and we know we cannot overlook ANY game. NONE.

My personal feeling is that @WM, @Citadel, and back to back games against UTC and WCU is the toughest part of the schedule. Especially considering the hurricane disruption and postponed home game.

We now get a bye week and then VMI and Wofford. We may not win those games, but it's going to be a little lighter sledding than it has been.

All the scouting the fans need, both teams are awful, whoever loses is really really awful.....

Shame on us if we don't.

we BETTER freakin' win at least One... VMI - and I really want Wofford after last year.

I don't know if I can take another year of waiting to beat Wofford. And that series (FU-Woff) is heavily in favor of the home team if I recall. Thus, next year at Wofford... Man, I don't even want to think about losing three straight to them dogs

Sooooo. Back to VMI

VMI is now 0-8. And 0-4 in conference. Would be embarrassing to be their only win. VMI may go “defeated”

Wofford is 1-4 in SoCon play. VMI is the one win

Other data points.

William and Mary - granted, very early ooc - beat VMI 41 - 7.
William and Mary beat us. 34- 24. By all data points we should beat these guys. I know the games not played on paper…

But comparing score etc.

Let’s win out and make the Mercer game (week after they play Alabama) something the entire SoCon is watching and pulling for us!

I generally view VMI to have a better Defense than offense. They held Citadel recently to 13. We held Citadel to 16 points.

A to HUGE key I would note is we were much healthier 3 or 4 games ago. 40 Stephens. Luke Clark. 8 Moson as starting DB. So this negates some of the William and Mary comparison etc …

It was After Citadel with those type injury losses that things started getting out of hand 😔.
I do realize that Western and Chatt are better than Citadel but still. There is a correlation there.

Back to my VMI Offense vs VMI defense comment. VMI has scored a Total of 39 points in 4 SoCon games.
So basically 10 points scored per SoCon game. If we get to 17-20 we should feel pretty good that we win. The most they have scored vs 4 SoCon teams was 16 vs Wofford. But their D is quite capable..,

Similarly. VMI held Citadel to only 190 yards. And VMI held Citadel to 0 - 11 on third down !!, Strong. Wow. And caused 2 turnovers too. . On the flip side VMI only gained 227 yards.

We are still CSU’s only win so maybe we can do the same for VMI?

AP, OUCH. I knew that was true a few weeks ago but hadn't looked since. I WANT so bad to beat Wofford but hope we can get CSU back on the schedule soon. That loss left a bad taste in my mouth - they seemed chippy etc

Anyway, any thoughts on VMI - I have seen instances where their Defense is really pretty decent. At least compare to their O.

Wofford held VMI to only 180 yards of total Offense.. again, not much offense for VMI. And WOff got 340+ of offense. This game was apparently wacky' though with 8 total turnovers. 5 by VMI and 3 by WOff.

I just noticed they have played 3 different QBs. And only Freshman and Soph. So no more Furman FR vs Senior at the QB spot this week..
Early in the year they played #1 a sophomore - Collin Shannon.
Then #12 Freshman Chandler Wilson came in in game 3 against Georgia Tech.
Then, just one game later, #15 Brady Hammonds, a freshman vs. Norfolk State.. and started for 3 games.
Then, back to #12 FR Chandler Wilson for the Citadel game.. again, just that one game.
And, back to #15 Brady Hammonds for the UTC game.
Man, that's a revolving door.

I bet we are most likely to see #15 Hammonds - he has 103 pass attempts on the year. (But 2 TD and 5 INT)
#1 Collin Shannon Sophomore only has 50+ pass attempts on the year. ( 0 TD and 2 INT)
#12 Chandler Wilson also has 50+ pass attempts on the year. (1 TD and 2 INT)

This does have the advantage for us that - ever so slightly - Hedden may actually be the more experienced QB for the first time this year... A few more games worth anyway. He has 164 pass attempts. (9 TD and 7 INT)

NONE of their QBs have a 100 Rating. all 80s and 90s. Hedden, by comparison, is a 134 ! We really need to take this W and regain our footing !

Yep need the win. A loss and in a virtual tie for last place.

Dave, as a consistent Furman fan, I remain very skeered of Keydets !

I ain't too smart but something occurred to me on this spooky week - we hadn't lost to Western Carolina in Greenville since.. 2014.

The last (NON-COVID year) loss to VMI was in Lexington - .,... in 2014. Coincidence? I can only hope.

Very consistent.

Against both Woffd and Citadel, Vmi ran basically 37 times and passed 23 times. Roughly. So 60 / 40 run more. Pass a little less. Right now with blown coverages that might be better for us.

Amazing the similar stats in those games. Both games a 2.5 yards per carry average for VMI. Good opportunity to see what we allow rushing. If we give 4+ rushing per carry we still haven’t fixed our issues in the front 7. Citadel also overcame a -2 turnover ratio to win at Vmi.

But while probably the easiest SoCon game there is it is no gimme. Both Citadel and Woffd had to rally in 4th quarter to win
