THE YEAR 2023

The year 2023 is the year all Paladin fans have been wanting, waiting and hoping for for way too many years. The basketball team accomplished something we had not seen in 49 years and some had never seen. Not only make the tournament but win a game in the tournament. The football team won the outright championship for the first tme in 33 years. The first 10 months and 17 days of the year was the year we could only dream of. Then came what will go down in history as the disaster of 2023. One game, one 3 hour time period slapped us back into reality. Should have expected it as the Furman fans we are. Before the game I was thinking this was the type game when everything is going great, set up and all you have to do is win a game you’re supposed to and we don’t. Been there done that, should have known what was coming but was hoping for better results this time. The only saving grace is the football has a chance for redemption. Will they take advantage of it or not. It is totally up to them. Will they right the ship or has the ship already sunk? Go Paladins!

Has the ship already sunk???
An outright Socon championship for the first time in over 30 years might be considered a sunk ship?
Please.

If we'd lost to Wofford in Week 2 and every other game been the same, we wouldn't even be talking about this.

We have so much more to think about than Wofford.

The 1985 team, which is certainly in the discussion for greatest Furman team ever, lost one regular season game, to NAIA member Newberry College. Two weeks later they beat NC State at Carter-Finley. Nobody remembers the Newberry game. If we keep winning, no one will remember the Wofford game.
Saturday, a Wofford grad sent an email to an entire board I am on asking if anyone saw the Furman score. I sent one the next day asking if anyone knew what Wofford's playoff seed was.

You missed the point, it’s about how the team reacts to a devastatng loss, has nothing to do with the championship.

It is a bummer that we lost, but it isn't devastating. There is literally no goal that we cannot achieve as a result of the loss.

That’s true, let’s do it.

In 2001 we were down at the half 28-27 to Division II Presbyterian College in the last game of the regular season. We went on a bit of a run the next few games. This sucks and it would be great to have home field all the way until Frisco, but there's no reason to not get back on the horse and trample some people. I like our chances.

I remember the Newberry score. Clearly you do too. I bet every player on that team does too
That said, I get your point. I often ask did DUKE win a national basketball title? Everyone knows the answer is yes. I then ask did they win the ACC weekend tournament that year? Almost no one knows.
Interesting side fact. In ACC basketball if a team wins a national titke it is more likely they did NOT win the ACC weekends tourney than that they did win it. Theory is that you get to go home and refocus

That PC game is probably not a good comparison as we won the second half 20-0 and the game 47-28.
