Elon beat "bad" Wofford 26-0. Furman beat "better" Wofford like a drum.

Not a Common Opponent, but still relevant & worth evaluating…

Uh -oh; made a post on ‘Guess the Elon score’ thread and I thought I was posting here. Elon played 5 teams this season that earned selections in the FCS Playoffs. Won 4 of them, including a win over #5 seed William & Mary.

Correct … which is why this is a ridiculous 1st round match-up.

Committee sticking it to both schools by not doing the G-W @ FU, Davidson @ Elon pairings that make sense.

Guess e*Loan still has some of that SoCon ‘stink’ on them that the Committee seems to hate so much.

Particularly aggravating fan base and team when they were in the socon. Knocked us out of the playoffs once when Forcier played. Let's extract some revenge.

Elon QB Matthew McKay is interesting; 23 year old RS Senior. Played at NC State’17 (RS), ‘18 and ‘19. Started 5 games for the Wolfpack in’19 and threw for 1000+ yards. Transferred to Montana State for the’21 season and started on a 12-3 Playoff team. He’s 6’4, 212, and has thrown for 2,400 yards and run for 400+ this season.

Look at the turnovers in those games. Massive advantage to Elon. We take care of the ball Sat, we win.

Talk about “ rent a player.”

North Dakota State crushed Montana State last year in championship game. This is what computer says:

On the other side, Montana State lost its quarterback Tommy Mellott on the first drive. The Bobcat offense struggled without its freshman phenom falling behind 35-0.

I am trying to understand what role the current Elon QB had last year and his playoff experience last year?

Elon sounds like a very formidable opponent to me but I will take them over “at Montana State” (happened in 2006) any day of the week.

Elon QB was Montana State’s starting QB in 2021.

He struggled in the latter part of the season and, believe, had a horrible game in their BIG rivalry game @ Montana.

Meanwhile, they had started playing a FR QB, mainly in Wildcat situations and he was by and large another RB, who may have thrown a few passes.

This is where it gets good….

During their bye week before their 2nd round Playoff game, Montana State Coaches told current Elon QB that he was not going to start the Bobcats 1st playoff game vs. UT-Martin. Said they were going with MSU Fan Favorite, “Touchdown” Tommy Mellott instead.

So, current Elon QB quit and hit the portal the week of the Playoff game…and ended up at Elon. He’s a Raleigh, NC native.


….and now you know ….. the REST of the story.

Haven't done a deeper dive yet, but Elon strikes me as one of those teams that isn't outstanding in any area, but is a good overall football team.

The good news for Furman is they are a run-more-than-pass team. Furman has made life really tough for those teams this season.
