Flip-flop Chatt and FU, then I'm good. It will all work itself out though.

The losing team of Mercer/FU shouldn't fall far. Hope we can get four in!

I disagree...Furman is the only team with two ranked FCS wins in the SoCon right now...Go 1-1 in the next two and Furman isn't at home...Four from the SoCon made in 2016 (looked it up this am)...Samford got in at 7-4 with no ranked wins and a 77-7 win over Mars Hill.

This needs to be shouted from the FCS rooftops - loudly enough for the Playoff Selection Committee members to hear.

Poll voters have been forced to respect the 4 SoCon Leaders, finally giving FU some well overdue respect this week, BUT it is easy to see them ‘redlining’ the SoCon Teams. They will only put 1 SoCon Team in their top 8, if that. It’s like there’s a ‘glass ceiling’ at #8 and 6 of those spots must be reserved for MVFC & Big Sky Teams.

You can start at the top…

* Sacramento State doesn’t have any ‘great wins.’ They beat a horrible Colorado State FBS Team that Massey has ranked 20+ spots below Furman…and they beat a bunch of Big Sky Teams that have only beaten other Big Sky Teams…for the most part.

* South Dakota State…same thing. They played a pretty bad .500 Iowa Team closely…and they’ve beaten a bunch of MVFC Teams that have only beaten other MVFC Teams…for the most part.

* Weber State…same thing. Pretty good FBS win over Utah State…who Massey says would be a middle of the pack SoCon Team…and then the same as Sac State…except they lost to Montana State.

* Montana State…completely blown out by an OK FBS Oregon State…beat Weber primarily because Weber’s Long Snapper gave them 8 points on 4 LAUNCHED snaps for Safeties. Hopefully, his bank accounts are being closely monitored…and beat a bunch of other Big Sky Teams

* North Dakota State…FBS loss…beat a bunch of MVFC Teams…lost to SDakSt

* Incarnate Word … FBS win over bad Nevada Team that per Massey is lower middle of the SoCon pack…and beat a bunch of Southland Teams

* Holy Cross … Nice FBS G5 win over decent Buffalo Team and then a bunch of meh PL, Ivy, NEC Teams…nothing special

So…unless you value wins over FBSINO Teams inordinately or you cede (which FUBeAR DOES NOT) that the Big Sky & MVFC are head & shoulders above the SoCon, there’s no good reason why “everyone” has those 7 Teams above the 4 SoCon Teams that could be in those Top 8 slots (because they similarly played top-tier FBS Teams decently…and beat a bunch of SoCon Teams…for the most part).

It’s unwarranted bias and it most likely will hurt the SoCon’s number of At-Large Teams and it most likely will hurt the SoCon’s performances (overall) in the Playoffs (because the value of being seeded in the Top 8 is exponentially better than not)…which will be used to justify low rankings or unranking in the 2023 pre-season…rinse & repeat.

Part of the issue is all of the SoCon teams will play one another. In the other large conferences, many times the top teams will not play one another.

I again raise the question that if the goal is to make the post season and win a national title, wouldn't it be better for Furman to schedule these weaker FBS teams than Clemson, NC State, Ole Miss, etc?

The money is probably better playing these much bigger schools, but so many of these ranked FCS teams have this "FBS scalp" on their belt when the quality of opponent is no better than a decent Big South team.

I think Nevada, Buffalo and Utah State are maybe a little better than Big South teams.

But I get what you are saying. There are bad B1G and ACC teams we could maybe, possibly beat. I nominate Nebraska, Indiana, Iowa (but they’ll probably get good again), Rutgers, usually Maryland, BC, GATech, VaTech, Miami and Duke.

I doubt Sunbelt or MAC teams would offer much of a payoff at all. Wouldn’t want to get smoked by App State or Liberty for free.

Reports are that the Citadel was paid $375,000 to pay App State this season. Furman reportedly was paid $415,000 to play Clemson.

In 2019, Furman reportedly earned $325,000 from Georgia State and $425,000 from Virginia Tech.

I suppose there is a balance. Money is money, but I sometimes wonder if taking a little lesser pay day might be worth the opportunity to notch a win against an FBS team.

Interesting. The numbers people usually throw around on these forums are twice that high. If we can get within $100K of the Clemson deal to play a well regarded Sunbelt team I wish we’d go for it. Somebody like WKU or Ohio might be good as well.

If money becomes a problem just find some sport apaladin really likes and cancel it.

Travel costs play into these contracts. Bus ride to Clemson very affordable. Bus ride to Georgia State and hotel/meal costs not as affordable. The NCAA has a rule if a destination is over a certain time amount then the visiting team has an overnight stay.

Furman will get its chance next year playing a weak FBS team in SC.

Not sure beating Charlotte gives you a bump. And Rice is usually a joke.
FIU would be ok since either they or FAU can have a good year, and even if you beat the crappier of the two, nobody knows the difference, so you get credit for beating the good one.

MAC teams are sort of the same. Nobody knows which one’s which so you can beat a really crappy team that won the MAC 3 years earlier and get undeserved credit.
