I’m skeered
Ok
I’ll be back later with more worthless info
Hoping to hear from FUBeAR and Jackal as they watch some and I know FUBEAR saw Mercer kill
Them but that was on road. Charleston can be a house of horrors !
Hot take 1 - Citadel is a better Woff. Not super great. . Just better. Same style of run as much as we can 80%? Throw 10 times and run 50 attempts. Not as dysfunctional as Woff. Same w poor O and good D. But def better than Woff. Beat ETSU
Woff lost to Mercer by 40
Cit Lost to Mercer by 17
But similar perhaps - Both Good D. Lackluster o.
Beat ETSU at home 20-17. These guys can beat us.
On ROAD. lost to Campbell 10-29 and
lost to Mercer 0-17
So 2 road losses vs good FCS teams and a decent home win. You can see they have some pretty stout defense. Allowed Mercer 17. Campbell 29. And ETSU 17.
O is where they struggle. 20. 10. O. Averaging 10 pts per FCS game however they hit 20 when in Charleston. A game for our D to shine !!! Much better team often times at home. And that’s the one good FCS win they have. In Charleston
QB is 19-41 w 2 TDs and 3 INT. Granted one game v App. Peyton Derrick - Former app guy who played 3 years at Woff some. Now as grad at Citadel. Only once has he thrown more than 12 times this year. Vs Mercer who they couldn’t move ball against

Jackal, FUBEAR ? Hoping for some of your analysis on Citadel
We have a common opponent in ETSU. Citadel beat ETSU 20-17. We beat ETSU 27-14
Citadel (v ETSU) ran on 58 plays and passed on 12. However I watched some of the 4th quarter.
. WE CANNOT ALLOW the gash run plays. ETSU would hold Citadel For a yard and then three yards and then Citadel would bust a 30 yd run on 3rd down occasionally. If memory serves that’s how they drove for the winning FG. 2 long runs. . Must play . Assignment football. And don’t give up the big run plays that have plagued us recently.
I like the 58/12 split. Just focus on stopping run and trust our DBs. Stack the box with 8. Or whatever is best to stop option. Trust our great DBs to cover
V ETSU the Cit had 320 yds and gave up ETSU 351 or so. We also gave ETSU 352 yards. But we gained 409. Tracks with the theory both Furman and Citadel can play some defense. We look to hopefully have a better offense
Our FCS games we have scored 27. 24. 27. They have scored. 20. 10. 0
Cmon D let’s be strong and shut these guys down.

The Citadel is a variation of the team we are familiar with.
Offensively, they aren't particularly impressive. They are rivaling Wofford for offensive inefficiency at only 7.5 ppg and at or near the bottom in every offensive category.
In the rushing game, they aren't quite as potent as you might expect from an option based team. Their running backs are what you'd probably expect from the Citadel - a couple sawed off thick-legged runners, but none appear to have taken over a game at any point.
The QB, Peyton Derrick, has bounced around a few programs (App and Wofford before). He's much bigger than your typical option QB (6'2 200) and isn't the shorter/shifty runner we're used to seeing from them. He'll run some, but that's not his highest and best use. Derrick's been around a while, so there is some veteran savvy there.
A bit like Furman, they've struggled to really break open chunk plays in the run game. Both teams will possess the ball, but neither unit has really seemed to explode on the ground this year like we've seen in the past.
Passing game-wise, they aren't impressive. Derrick is completing about 46% of his passes and has more interceptions than touchdowns. They really don't seem to have the go-to big play receiver like they had for so long in Raleigh Webb.
Defensively, they are ok. Not really a standout, but good enough to keep you from steam rolling them.
Bottom line, this is absolutely a team Furman should beat. Yes, playing on the road against this team is never comfortable. They've hung around with Mercer, ETSU, and Campbell, all decent teams. Their defense is solid enough to let them stay in the game in the hopes their offense starts getting it together.
We've got to stop turning the ball over on offense and giving away possession. We've got to tackle. Do those things and we should be ok.

Even a run oriented team should try some passes against Furman and expect a blown coverage or two. I would expect some wheel routes, passing team or not.

We always get their best shot. Go down there and take care of business. No need to take them lightly. Eliminate the mistakes that have hindered us the last 2 games and we will win. Do your job!

We better be ready. They beat us in every statistical category last year and would have won the game if not for a bogus blocking out of bounds penalty.

LOL - this, below, is FUBeAR’s signature line & pic on AGS…
“Every single statistical category - we win!” - Coach Brent Thompson, Head Football Coach, A Citadel 10/16/21 (following a double-digit loss to Furman).
Johnson Hagood Stadium - Home of A Citadel - ain’t it something?

While our passing defense has, by and large, been good this season, we have been bitten by deep passes down the sidelines each of the last three games. That's gotta stop.
One thing we cannot let the Citadel do is get big chunk plays on offense. Their offense simply isn't good enough to have to methodically work downfield.

I understand they had a problem with lead paint or some such but my gosh!! If you have to use bleachers spend a little bit at least!

When I've watched the Citadel this year a little bit, they didn't seem to be attacking the edge as much. Our corners are playing physical this season. I was impressed with the play of our corners fighting through blocks and traffic in the Samford game. Micah Robinson especially.
Hendrix mentioned Spangler's experience against the option, as well as Kevin Lewis. Curious to see how we attack the Citadel offense this week.
