Anyone going to fanfest and the scrimmage in PS? If the scrimmage is like in past years even though scheduled from 2-4, the scrimmage won’t actually start until 3’ish.

Going.

Happy to report back in great detail, but I promise that report will say absolutely nothing, despite that detail.

So… I won’t.

ugh! I have a friggin' couples wedding shower to attend - why do people schedule wedding stuff that conflicts with football?

When people do stuff like this you are under no obligation to attend. You can’t be held responsible for their inconsideration. Its a rule.

The scrimmage was pretty short. Maybe 25-30 plays? Didn’t really see anything to get excited about except Devin Wynn looks like an NFL running back. Just hard to judge when you are playing against yourselves not knowing who is 1st, 2nd or 3rd team. On offense there were a lot of negative plays especially early. Played 4 different QBs and none stood out. Sisson looked about like he did in the spring. He tried a couple of deep throws if you want to call 25 yds deep, early toward the sidelines and missed badly on both. He came back with a nice completion later that was more toward the center of the field. Still don’t understand why we pretty much ignore the middle in the passing game. One thing for sure is we still can’t run the option regardless of the QB. We lost a minimum of 3 yds every time we tried to run it. Minus 5 yds was the norm. Most of Sisson completions were sideways type behind the line. No receivers stood out but I did count 5 balls that were catchable and weren’t. The OL has some good and bad plays but that is expected. Like everyone expected the defense will be the strength. One positve is it looks like we will be ok in the kickng game, kickoffs, punting and FGs. Don’t think we will win many shootouts. Look forward to everyone else thoughts with more expertise than me which is pretty much everyone. 😳

Unless we really learn how to run the read/option, that page in the play book should be burned. Right now, we don’t have a clue how to run it.
O line looked much better. We ran the ball well today.
Wilson is very athletic with good feet. Needs seasoning. Best throws today came from the walkons in drills. Not a good sign. Mixed bag today
Too many dropped passes today.

Agreed, the way we run it has no chance for success. QB is 5 yds deep, single rb is 8 yds deep. They start sideways, there is no option its a straight pitch every time. How far does the rb have to run just to get back to the los? 20 yds? Lots of time for the D to react. IMHO if you’re going to run an option you need to do it from under center.

A couple other things. Receivers still seem to have trouble getting open, still don’t think we have much speed at WR. Defense appears to be very deep. We ran players in on every play on defense. Hope we don’t do it quite as much in games. I like the new tunnel thingy the players run out of. Much better.

Two points on passing.

The NFL considers any pass over 15 yards a "deep" pass, so 25 yards certainly qualifies.

Remember too that nearly a quarter of all passes in the NFL are behind the line of scrimmage. Using data within the last 10 years, only about 9% of passes in the NFL are attempted downfield and between the hashes. Most downfield passes are going to the sideline. Again, the vast majority of passes in the NFL are thrown within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage.

So, the notion that Furman is attempting shorter passes and throwing deeper routes to the outside is pretty much consistent with football.

The 25 yard part isn’t the bad part. It’s the “missed badly” part that is disturbing. Is apaladin exaggerating?

On the option thing, did we run the inside option any?

Did the new kid screw up his option reps?

“missed badly”- don’t think am. One the receiver had a step and the other was well coverd. Don’t think either were catchable even if the receiver was by himself.

No inside option, We just take the snap run sideways a couple of yards and pitch. I don’t call that an option. Remember when we occasionally ran a true option when the QB is under center, has the dive option, the keep option and the pitch option? Since we never run that I assume we don’t have the personnel to run it?

“new kid” We didn’t try it much maybe 4 times but it lost 3-5 yds every time. Not sure if Jace ran it or not. Like I said it was a pretty short scrimmage and the max plays any one qb got was maybe 12. Jace did break one run as did one of the other qbs. Don’t think Jace completed a pass but if he did it was a short one.

In hindsight the scrimmage didn’t offer much as they did not tackle to the ground so there were a lot of quick whistles. Just really a glorified practice. Coach did say they would start narrowing down who gets the reps in practice this week. Just hard to judge with so many players getting reps. Need to start getting focused, game is 13 days away.

Maybe we’re just playing possum to trick ourselves.

I think you need to listen to what the coaches are saying - Clay mentioned lots of guys out nothing serious. And a little weariness showed yesterday. This has been a hard pre-season with a lot of tackling. So yesterday was not indicative of wants going on—in the scrimmages and practices.

I'm not arguing with Apaladin but Furman has raised the speed of the receivers. I've seen it first hand in two practice sessions. Plus - I'll take Brian Bratton's option, he likes this group a lot.

The other thing to keep in mind - this is a large group of players and Clay has said over and over we're repping a lot of players on offense. That ends as of Monday as they start to prep for A&T and the other teams Furman will face.
