Its not in the Furman dna but heads need to roll but chances of that are virtually zero. Agree?

Agree. That isn’t us. So just accept that we aren’t like other programs and hope that maybe somehow things will sort themselves out.

Really?!?! It’s not us!?!? Why? Why would it not be ok to hire a new Offensive Coordinator?

It should be but its very hard to fire your lifelong friends/buddies. Thats why there is virtually no chance of seeing any coaching changes.

A fall season like this spring and Furman will lose a ton of followers and I think CCH’s job will be in jeopardy. We were 3-4 against average competition and there was only one game where we might have played well-Western? The next FU coach will be outside of the Furman family tree. One man’s opinion which may be completely wrong.

Again the gap between what was advertised in the spring and what we got was so huge that it makes you wonder “how could that be?”
If CCH does not figure that out there is no way his job over the next few years is completely safe. I know diehard Furman fans (slightly below Flagman) who say if the product in the fall is the same, they will find a new hobby. These are extremely loyal fans and no way any one could call them fair-weather fans.

If this were my other alma mater (Ole Miss) the OC would already be gone (probably mid season) and the HC seat would be red hot. The fact that neither seat appears to even be warm shows that FU is different. If CH was gonna fire his old buddy, he would have already done it. As for CH I think the admin is pretty in love with his bio (alumnus, came from a service academy). If there is an alum tearing it up in the Ivy League, he might need to worry, but otherwise, nah.

I just get the feeling that the admin is above worrying about sort of low brow stuff like wins and losses. And I doubt many students even know how to keep score. Fans will threaten to stay home, but many of the grumpy will be too old to go to games pretty soon anyway.

And the last 2 coaching changes haven’t gone as planned, so what’s to say another one would? Best to just accept that nobody’s going anywhere. I think there is a good chance the league will go downhill faster than we do which will make us dominant! (If Mercer gets good, Cronic is out of there).

Let's do a thought experiment.

Here are the records* of a select few SoCon head coaches during their SoCon tenures. You match their name to their record and then tell me, blindly, who you'd rather have.

15-15 (12-11)
18-13 (14-6)
25-18 (21-10)
9-8 (8-4)
35-29 (26-20)

Sanders
Hendrix
Hatcher
Wright
Conklin

*records are current as of this week.

None of the above, or any of the above if want mediocrity, the correct answer is Cronic. :D

Yep. No losing records but nothing more than MEDIOCRITY on display in that question. (And, by the way, I highly doubt Cronic leaving the state of GA for anything other than a a power Five FBS.)

Which is the only answer you could give to maintain your preconceived position.

If we had Cronic, how can we chop down the Furman coaching tree? I thought we had to go elsewhere, or no? The only bad Furman coaching tree coaches happen to all coach at Furman, is that the idea?

Also, you know Mercer was 5-5 this year, right? One of those 5 wins was against UTC's JV team.

The grass is always greener in someone else's pasture.

FUBeAR always likes to be factually accurate...

* Mercer IS (not “was”) 5-5 in this Split Season (0-3 Fall & 5-2 Spring | 5-5 Overall & 5-2 in the SoCon).

* The Bears play @ Samford on Saturday & may finish (0-3 Fall & 6-2 Spring OR 0-3 Fall & 5-3 Spring | 6-5 Overall & 6-2 in the SoCon OR 5-6 Overall & 5-3 in the SoCon)

* If Mercer finishes 6-5 Overall & 6-2 in the SoCon AND CIT beats VMI, Mercer will be SoCon Champions & will claim the SoCon’s AQ bid to the FCS Playoffs. So, in that case, they will finish 6-6 overall if they lose their 1st round Playoff game. If they win a Playoff game, their record becomes too variable to go into here

* If Mercer finishes 6-5 Overall & 6-2 in the SoCon AND VMI beats CIT, Mercer may finish with those records or they may receive an At-Large bid to the Playoffs, as a few FCS pundits have posited...and the bullet above applies.

* As Furman did, Mercer played against the opposing Players that Chattanooga chose to put on the field. Mercer won the game over Chattanooga’s chosen Players. Chattanooga does not have a JV Football Team.

* While Coach Cronic has served on Furman’s Coaching Staff in the past, he is an Alum of and former Player for the University of Georgia.

All of that is true, but not relevant to the point.

I put Hendrix's record up against a number of SoCon coaches that have been around a few minutes. His record stacks up better than all of them except, potentially, Josh Conklin (and its about even). Conklin, of course, inherited a much better team than Hendrix did and the Terriers look to be a hot mess right now - coaches leaving, players leaving, and the team quit the season.

I understand college football is very much a "what have you done for me lately" affair. Folks have a bad taste in their mouth from this spring, and understandably so. I get it.

At the same time, any rational analysis of Hendrix's tenure when compared to the arc of former Furman coaches or his own conference peers is to suggest he is having a better run than most.

Hendrix isn’t going anywhere. I hope he does better or at least gives GQ a stern do better talk. If we don’t do better, I reserve the right to gripe on the UFFP. Somehow I don’t think CH will get all shook up by that.

The 2020/21 FCS football season needs to have a big ole asterisk next to it. It's a failed, botched, screwed up attempt of a season! Our spring season results... pretty unacceptable. That said, I am not going to criticize the efforts by the coaches, players, or any support staff because of the results. These people were placed in a situation totally different than any other season ever. This isn't an excuse, just an objective fact. Furman has several issues that need to be addressed before the fall season. We have a staff that knows how to win. I'm sure they know a repeat of this spring will not be accepted. Everyone has an opinion as to what should happen...the coaches do too. I'm lucky I don't have a message board to remind me every time I screw up.

About Us

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
