Samford - movin' on...

We will all feel better if - IF - we can beat Samford. I did say IF.
The reason is we beat both VMI (60-21) and Samford (55-14 or so) by 30/40 points EACH in 2019. If we lose to them both, well, something is amiss.
Hopefully, this last week was a real wake up call. NO ONE can just show up and beat anyone in the conference.
OK, on to Sammy - last time we ran all over them with some well-timed passes. Can we improve our PASS Protection this week? Will we be able to run better? Can we run at least enough to make them respect play-action? WILL THEY USE THE SAME FORMULA of stack the box and blitz making us hit some screens / crossing routes / hot receivers ?? Fine with me - if we can't beat that then we don't deserve to win anyway ... That's just basic football.
Focusing on the other side, Samford is probably a bigger ask than VMI. They just came from beating the very same Western team that we beat. And, likewise, beat Western badly. We beat Western 35-7. A week later Sam beat Western 55-27. They kept on scoring, we kinda pulled off. That said they averaged a very strong 6+ yards per rushing attempt and went 26-36-0 through the air. They piled on 600+ yards of O (Western D apparently stinks)...
A key here is they don't look to be quite as strong on D as we are. They allowed 450 yards of O to Western who we allowed 110 yards of O to. They allowed 22 first downs to WCU and we allowed 5 ... that encourages me. But they are better than Western, mostly on offense, so we better be ready.
Again, our D has had two stellar games. Stellar! But we better have some Pass protect plays in there.. our OL better pick up blitzes, our RB better pick up blitzes, our QB has to get rid of the ball when a blitz comes and it is second and three.. throw it away and live to play 3rd and three. Heck, maybe a simple shovel pass or something? Maybe some early screen passes to deflect the blitz? But basically better OL and RB protection for Hamp. It's that simple.

Sammy has won 3 straight in PS. I think we will have a much better idea how good the defense is after Saturday. Best offense we’ve faced by far.

Interesting you say that, as last year VMI averaged 407 ypg and 5.5 yards/play and Samford averaged 404 ypg and 5.4 yard/play.....

Last year does not matter at all. We beat VMI 60-21 last year. Did that matter?

Yeah it probably DID matter. It’s probably what we game planned around. And then it was a different scheme. And we didn’t adjust or execute.
As far as sayin Sam O is “by far” better than VMI I guess we’ll see. But the track record is that they’re very similar.

Lol. If last week didn’t give you a wake up call as to our inability to in-game adjust / coach then you weren’t watching. Facts and truth.
Same as it ever was. Stop our run - like Citadel and Woff last year .... VMI this year - Good Grief man, it’s V M I - and we can’t adjust or do enough else to win
I’ll give one clear Definition of “loser mentality” - “this was an easy win last year. Let’s look ahead”. Yep. My mentality of “IF we win” woulda been better —- it leads to “ HOPE for the best but PLAN for the worst.” IE have a game plan that accounts for the unlikely possibility VMI can jam us at the LOS. Account for the unexpected
Hopefully we learn. Not sure it should take Five years of coaching to learn some basic adjustments - for every defensive move there is a counter to be played. Let’s win Furman

Yes we will have to wait and see. A few observations: VMI was one dimnsional, no running game(20 yds). Sammy had 311 passing and 319 rushing against WCU. 319 rushing was one yard less than our vaunted rushing attack got against WCU. 311 was about 100 more than FU against WCU. Just going by that SU offense looks to be as good as FU’s. Sammy also went with a new QB against WCU. He was 26-36 for 311 yds 2 TD’s and no int.

That Samford QB came out of our rec league here in North Augusta and played for Aquinas over in Augusta. I don’t think we were interested in him.

Not 100% sure, but I believe he ‘soft committed’ to Mercer & they backed off when they picked up Kaelen Riley’s commitment. He hasn’t exactly ‘lit it up’ @ Sammy...until last week...apparently.

Yes, I expected him to do better than he has. I guess I hope this last game was just a blip. I never coached him so if he stinks it ain’t my fault.
