Feb. 27 - VMI

Furman has first road game. VMI was supposed to play this weekend, but the game was "postponed" due to COVID concerns in UTC's program.

VMI was picked ahead of WCU in the preseason awards. They are effectively a one-man band, and that one man is really good, Reese Udinski. They also have a talented wideout in Jakob Herres. Curiously, Western also had a similarly named player, Jacob Harris, who came up big for them.

VMI can get after it, and there's no denying Udinksi's talent.

The last time Furman played the Keydets…
Hamp Sisson's first career start (277 yards passing, 39 yards rushing).
Furman had four sacks.
Furman had 338 yards passing, 299 yards rushing.
Gordo had 148 yards receiving, Wynn 102 yards rushing.
VMI had its two-headed monster Udinski and Alex Ramsey.

I'm guessing Furman played a pretty conservative game plan against Western. Curious to see what Furman does on both sides of the ball in Lexington.
I expect VMI to throw deeper passes against the Furman defense. We got to see a sneak peek into some of the packages Furman can throw against a team in passing downs. Will Furman's size and speed along the defensive line make Udinski uncomfortable? How often will VMI challenge Blackshear?

Final thought - we've got a player at SPUR - I thought Dae'one Wilkins had a dominating first start. I'd look for Wilkins to play a larger role Saturday.

Also notable, VMI deployed a pretty unique-for-college 5-3 defense against Furman last year.

What’s the odds VMI game gets played? They’ve already shutdown baseball and basketball.

To Astrodin's point, our offensive gameplan against Western was the most conservative one I've seen since the Fowler days, especially in the second half. I'm not saying it was bad, just conservative. To the point of this thread, I think we're a little better than VMI, they haven't seen game speed for 15 months, and they are allowing (more or less) no fans. We should win by multiple touchdowns this Saturday.

I'm sure the baseball team faked COVID. After all, they were only playing N.C. State.

I’ll take conservative and 35 points all day long. Those long clock eating scoring drives are demeaning, defeating and demoralizing. They get the D frustrated and arguing amongst themselves.

On his show this afternoon, Clay said he expects to play. The teams will be tested on Wednesday. Some on the VMI board are not as confident.

Rumor has it that Coach R called Coach H today and suggested a couple extra touchdowns be scored on VMI just for spite.

I agree I'll take methodical, and patient any day… Hamp of course will make more mistakes this season as will other teammates - it happens. But the calm displayed by Hamp was well beyond his play experience.

I think Furman showed a lot of eye candy on offense but didn't show their full hand. Our game management and platoon substitutions and the ability to shift formations keeping in the same personnel took a toll on Western.

I'm guessing there is a lot more to some of the formations and personnel than we saw on Saturday.

Does anybody know what the agreed upon SoCon threshold is for shutting down a program? In b’ ball it seems to be set at 1 unconfirmed positive any kinda way associated with the program. But in FBS football, teams had a good many positives before they cancelled. The threshold should have gotten even less strict since then if we are looking at science at all.

FBS was a minimum of 55 scholarship players available or no players available for a position group. Such as no offensive linemen available. I’m guessing SoCon is somewhat different.
