Grainger Leaving

This certainly deserves its own spot as many may miss it when posted in another thread. He has entered the dreaded “transfer portal”. Very disappointing. Puts a damper on the upcoming season and alters our favorite spot maybe. Every time he took a snap I thought something exciting could happen.

Yup. 100% agree. Love Hamp but it hurts regardless bc I think that leaves us with Hamp and NO BACKUP.

One injury away from screwed. And even if Hamp stays healthy you have to think we run the option/QB less... which helps an opposing D A LOT as it cuts back on our playbook a little. Nice when you can run the QB 5+ times a game. Now they may cut that back a few times because of fear of injury

My speculation and I have nothing but a guess here...Perhaps Shiflett will play a role at QB....or, someone significant already in the portal is on the way and has played in an option/hybrid offense that had a recent coaching change and style of offense...That's a guess

If you were reading the tea leaves - it sounded like Hamp was the leading candidate for starting QB. Comments said: no one worked harder in the off-season, improved his arm strength, saw pics of him in off-season workouts in Bama, and saw a video of the spring practice of him running the option to perfection.

Still, I like Darren and I wish him well…

So, who backs up Sisson? Jack Hardin — I spoke to Jack's dad this summer at Seaside - I spotted him proudly wearing his FU ball cap. I've always thought Jack ran the offense really well when he got into a game and in scrimmages. He's the first obvious backup option. I agree about Shiflett. Shiflett is back listed as QB on the roster. Shiflett was 3 star QB getting a lot of attention from ACC schools (GaTech) until he broke his ankle. He was a very mobile athletic option QB.

I don't think this takes the option out of play - it's a core part of our offense. This does put some heat on Jace Wilson coming in next year.

Darren is a great guy...That part of it makes it tougher I think...He's a great talent, but a better person...I do wish him the best though...I'll root for him wherever he goes...Even Marshall if I have too...Please don't go there Darren lol

Agreed, good guy. On the surface it looked like he liked it at Furman. He was at every basketball game.

I'm beginning to really dislike the portal. seems like it makes it easy for players to transfer. Do the schools have no control over transfers?

Sounds like more than a guess

agree with you Astro. unless we get a transfer or Shiflett is a real answer... we were fine with 2 quality QBs as R-Sophs and then Jace next year. If Hamp is the only guy we absolutely HAVE to have another guy or guys on the way and even then we are thin bc if Hamp gets hurt we are back to the junk we had a few years ago of nobody having been developed and playing true freshman - not ideal at any position but esp at QB. That's why I liked having Two R-Sophs and Jace coming. That's how we used to be with juniors and seniors playing and letting freshman redshirt and develop.

Maybe I will find out we have a transfer coming or something. Shiflett maybe. Just saying Grainger had to be one of our top two so this hurts.

And for those that say "it's okay" many of the people here said we had found a superstar in Grainger as he was injured in HS... and slipped through the cracks. So if he was a superstar in the making this can't be a positive

I really hope so.

Since I was previously told it was no big deal to only have 2 scholarship QBs, I guess now I'm looking for the explanation for how it's no big deal to have 1 scholarship QB.

And, by the way, QBs that lose/don't win the starting job transfer all the time. That's one of the reasons why every other team wants to have some depth at the position.

And the QB recruit has more interceptions than TDs and a completion rate of 56.5%.

So, essentially, the Paladins' next 2-3 years depend entirely on either (a) Sisson both improving a lot and staying healthy or (b) adding QB talent through transfer(s).

I’ll reserve judgement until I see if we have a transfer or what the plan is. ...

BUT I admit I thought of you, youwouldno, when I saw this development. I don’t like the development - wish Grainger was staying! - but it certainly smacks of your point I have seen you make in the past and others gave you heat for. We might should have had a freshman QB on campus. We HAVE to get one coming (Jace) or a transfer or both

I hate it! After watching the Georgia State game last year, where he played GREAT, I thought we had found our qb for the next 4 years. That was one of the best games I have ever seen by a Furman qb. I really hate it that he is leaving. If he were to stay at Furman, you never know what would happen. He might not have started the first game this year, but might have later been the starter for 2 1/2 years..... who knows.

But in my opinion, Grainger has to do what he thinks is best for him. While I wish he would change his mind, if he does indeed leave, I wish him the best.

Shiflett is still listed as a WR on the 2020 roster. If you click on his name it takes you to the 2019 roster where he is listed as a QB. Grainger is also still listed on the roster, which I thought he wasn’t this afternoon but prolly just missed it. 4 other QBs on the roster besides Hardin but I’m guessing they are all walk ons.
