As an avid follower of college football....Can we fast forward 4 months, with hopes of a return to normalcy...and talk about the upcoming football season?

CH is looking like a genius by having early spring practice.

Yes sir. Winter practice was a good idea. I wonder if Brand X is having spring football?

I'm very optimistic about the upcoming season and hope we can have this CVirus subdued by then. It sure would be a bummer to have football cancelled.

Yes indeed...a lot of positive momentum was built, having spring practice early. Now I hope that everyone goes to work while quarantined at home!

Who do we think wins the QB battle?

My opinion having seen zero spring practice is that it’ll be DG’s to lose once again.

I agree with that. A couple of thoughts.

Every preseason thing I've read about Furman mentions the WRs as the most improved group on the team. That's sort of a difficult concept considering we graduated one of the top WRs in program history (Thomas Gordon). However, I think the group will be deeper than it was last year, and that will in turn help Grainger.

It was no secret last season that you could throw off Furman's offense by loading up the box, limiting the damage of the run game, confusing our young QBs, and forcing us to throw. We were not a good team in predictable passing situations.

In 2020, I think we will see more depth at WR. This year's group should give us better balance in the passing game.

I think DG has a ton of potential. He showed moments of brilliance last year, especially in the Georgia State game. With a good OL, solid rotation of backs, another year under his belt, and now potentially more depth at WR, I expect good things.

Jackal, Good summary. I do see where people focus on our offense more than D - our other BIG struggle was stopping option football (losses to both Damn Woff and Citadel). Though I’ll grant that vs the Citadel our D was ok while vs Wofford our D got pushed around if I recall.

I mean, I wouldn't read too much into that.

There's no magic bullet to stopping the option. Both of those teams are really good at running it. They run it for a reason. They are going to "get their yards" running that offense. It's almost impossible to completely shut it down.

Furman's defense largely played fine in those contests. The Paladin D held Wofford well under their season average for rushing, for instance. Against the Citadel, the game was 7-3 at the half and the two second half touchdowns came on short fields gifted by the offense (one drive started on the 6th).

A little better offensive production in those games and you'd see much better defensive numbers. The Citadel only scored a touchdown on one drive where they had cross the 50.

I hear ya. But v Wofford I couldn’t believe what I saw with them RUNNING three consecutive plays to successfully get a first and 25 once or twice. Death dealer D shouldn’t allow that

You are right GF. IIRC they did that a couple of times. Very disheartening and discouraging.
