Sometimes I really wonder if they have much knowledge of opponent.
Interesting to me is the ranking order:
AGS (people fans like us who watch games) - Furman 12
Coaches (at least know conference opponents) - Furman 15
STATS - media guys - Furman 17
In any case you can see we are gaining recognition and name again. That helps a lot w each year for at-large and in case of losing streak. If we had started unranked we would be unranked now but as we started ranked we still are as we should be
We'll probably lose to Mercer. They scare me. They may be unranked and got creamed by Austin Pee last week, but they still scare me.

I am entitled to my opinion. for what it’s worth as Jackal said when you have -3 or so turnover ratio you get CREAMED. Well Mercer had - FOUR turnover ratio and still put up 34 points and was in the game w APeay. 3 turnovers and a blocked punt. They shouldn’t even be in game w NEGATIVE FOUR TURNOVER RATIO. I was the one who said we couldn’t contain GSU. Many disagreed w me. I got PMs about our plan to contain Ellington the QB and how it would work. Still waiting for that plan. Still... waiting... 48-42 we had no answer.
And that same GSU team just lost to mighty mighty Western Michigan by FIFTY SEVEN to FREAKIN TEN. . You could give us an SEC DE and Deion Sanders we couldn’t hold GSU to 10. It’s just not in our pass D DNA. We like to lay back and watched him carve us up. Now that said, we greatly improved vs VT.
Greatly. But how does it take coaches who have been doing this stuff TWENTY YEARS an entire game to figure out that D vs GSU where you let a strong QB get comfortable doesn’t work?
I hope we kill Mercer. I really do. I just know if you had told me our D coaches would run the SAME DAM defense vs GSU after 4 consecutive TDs by them I woulda stood behind our coaches and said “no way, I have faith that SURELY our coaches are far too smart for that”. Apparently I was wrong. Four consecutive TDS and we continued not to blitz much and watch them hang two more consecutive TDs. What’s the very definition of insanity? DOING THE SAME THING AND EXPECTING A DIFFERENT RESULT. We have a great great team who I love and pull for but we are capable of letting passing teams score AT ANY TIME.
It’s just a matchup thing.
I hope we win. But don’t ever tell me passing teams aren’t a threat etc. Bobby Johnson was a defensive mastermind!!! He was an all time great ! Yet he dropped playoff games to throwing teams in 99 and 2000 and could barely get by not-much-talent UTC because of the air raid they employed. One year we had a super team under Bobby Johnson and beat UNC etc and yet around same time we held on vs UTC 40-35.
I want to kill Mercer. Kill. Lol. But I respect BL and as PaulC agreed BL is a great coach when he has a great QB (more than most as that is his MO). And BL said Riddle is best QB he has had since Ingle Martin. And I believe him be he hasn’t said that since Ingle. He doesn’t sugar blow. If BL says that about Riddle I believe him.
The key here is to stop the run of Devezin and get to Riddle a lot and hit him all day. AP was able to get in the backfield. Blitz and get all up in their grill and make them uncomfortable.
Just saying numbers can be deceiving- when you only lose by 14 w minus four TO ratio.. that can be misleading. Georgia State had a similar turnover ratio at western Michigan and lost by 47
And for those that think I’m scared of every opponent I just respect them all. Hello VMI ETSU. We are all close enough in talent to to win at any time. But to show I am objective in my assessment I would rather play we-just-beat-GT Citadel as. A running team than Mercer. We are masters at stopping option!!!. Right now I see Furman, Citadel, Samford and Mercer as top possible teams. I think we win vs ETSU after this game so I really want this one to start a run!!!
