scouting Mercer

One thing that concerns me w Mercer (i watch them as we speak) - the corners of APeay have played tight in some cases and troubled the Mercer recvr. We better not go back 5 yards on these guys WRs Mercer has the QB and WR to take advantage. They just do.
Austn Peay has bothered the Mercer OL getting in backfield and hitting Mercer QB but man Mercer can throw ball well. NO SOFT CORNERS! Get to the QB !
Encouraging is either Austin Peay has a great run D or the Mercer OL is struggling to put holes to run through. Probably some of both as FUBeAR said Mercer OL isn't great.. but Austin Peay is known for great run D this year.
Austin Peay does two things REALLY well - RUN D.. PASS D - two pick 6s vs Mercer I - calling this honest - don't think we get. AP was cutting in front of recvrs and taking picks to the house w tighht coverage. I just don't envision us doing that ... they were letting their CBs play aggressive to jumpin' routes. hope we do our thing but watch that part of the tape!
As we all know it's about MATHCUPS - thats my thing here. We are AWESOME. But Mercer plays to our weakness - like the GSU offense did and we all saw how that went. Before someone says "GSU is great " .. GSU got ththe SHIZ kicked out of them today by a MAC team in Western Michigan. Western Michigan beat GSU 57-10 FIFTY SEVEN to TEN ! So it is entirely possible to defend that O, we just don't do a good with passing O

Watched the same game - Furman just needs to be Furman and we'll be fine. Personally I think Riddle will be feeling pressure from Seabrook and Hope. The Govs played physical I expect the Dins to do the same.

Of course, we just held an ACC team to 123 yards passing on 21 attempts.
VT threw for 344 against Boston College and 272 against ODU.

Astro, Cool - I hope you are right man !!!
you are right the Govs played very physical especially the DL. The difference I saw was how tight the APeay corners played though. When the DL broke through the corners were waiting to make a pick and cut in to take the ball infront of recvr. We need to do that. If we sit behind the recvrs we may be in trouble.
The score was 48 -34. So despite the physicality we reference Mercer scored A TON. 34 points wins a lot of games. It was just a score fest. Hinged on a block punt and two pick 6 from Austin Peay - those THREE turnovers changed it or Mercer probably scores 50

I said this on the other thread -
Mercer struggled to run. APSU was playing in their backfield. They didn't have a lot of time to throw downfield.
You can play tighter coverage if you know a team doesn't have time to throw the ball deep.
Just like today - VT didn't have the overall team speed at receiver that GSU did. We were able to play tighter and they didn't do a whole lot in the passing game.

right, just
facts. Jackal, you have good numbers there. the one that shocked me was that (as you say, POINTS MATTER) - GSU just got azz kicked for FIFTY SEVEN to TEN. Not to be toooo transitive
but that was a little shocking. after we played GSU everyone was so impressed with their O and said on here not to worry about our D... that the GSU O was just pretty unstoppable. My score is just a fact (like your numbers are facts too!) and is a little disconcerting .. I don't think you or I (I know I wouldn't ) would have thought GSU would either lose like tthat or, more importantly, be held to 10 points. I didn't think a MAC team could do that. that score, combined with my predisposition to hate playing passing teams (like GSU) and wathing Mercer heave it around for 34 points (despite 32 turnover!) just didn't build my confidence.
I know we CAN beat Mercer. I love our team - great players and depth. just not the
matchup this Sat

Georgia State is an FBS team. They have an inherent advantage over Furman by that fact alone. They scored 38 points against Tennessee. They have a good offense.
Having a bad game against Western Michigan doesn't mean that GSU doesn't have a good offense. Western Michigan put up almost 700 yards of offense and 450 yards rushing and was +3 in turnovers. You go +3 in turnovers against just about anyone you'll likely be talking about a blowout.

here's a stat to watch: Mercer had 200+ yards of kickoff returns. and that's not just because there were a lot of kickoffs ! that's part of it but they really do excel at KOR - 6 KOR for 217 yards or an average of 36 because they had one for 77 yards and another great one. very dangerous here. again, Durden is just a weapon

Good news there. Atkins has kicked off 17 times, only 5 have been returned.

Riddle threw the interceptions but he also completed 29 passes for 287 yds and 4 TD's. They had 6 receivers that caught at least 3 passes. We will have to put pressure on him or tighten the coverage. We know #2 is not going to happen. We need to put pressure on him.

We just held an ACC team to 123 yards passing to go with 4 sacks and interception.
And you still complain about tightening up the pass defense.
