I have no idea how coaches manage all of this.
There is a reason most of the P4 programs have GMs now. I'm not sure how Furman does it. I would imagine it's still a lot of our coaches doing the leg work, but hopefully they have some more help than they had a few years ago.
Not only a GM but a payroll department. Clempson built a new building last year just to house their athletic payroll department.
Jordan Sorrells is the Clemson GM with a salary of $390,000.

https://clemsontigers.com/coaches/jordan-sorrells/
FUBeAR once had a Career Counseling session with a young Jordan Sorrells who was, at the time, bound and determined to take his talents to the exciting world of Pharmaceutical Sales. FUBeAR convinced him to stay in the Football ‘game’ because that’s where his passions truly were. Seems like he oughta write FUBeAR a check for about 20% of that $390k, don’t it? At least 10%.

I will commit blasphemy here and admit there is a price. I would wear “that paw” and that god awful orange and Barney purple for $390,000 a year. There I said it.

And I would be very, very, excited and very, very, proud to do so.
I see what you did there.

What is the deadline for the players that have entered the portal to make their decision? I would think it would be soon so that the rosters can be finalized by the time summer workouts start.

I think they only have to be enrolled in time for fall semester, but I would imagine if they wanted to play they'd have to be enrolled in time for fall camp.

This whole portal thing is just so interesting to me.

Moson, I believe, played in 7 games for Furman. He is coming off an injury that ended his season last year after only 5 games. He played for a 3-8 FCS team.

Utah has 10 players currently on roster listed as a CB. They added another 4 or 5 DBs in the signing period. They've brought in more at transfers at the position.

Unfortunately this has not been a good off-season for FU football. Probably the worst. Correct me if I am wrong but more departures than ever and in turn more offers than ever but fewer commits than ever.

I'm not sure that's a fair assessment.

This is a new era in college football. I'm not sure you even look three or four years ago and draw a lot of parallels. Furman is having to deal with it just like everyone else is dealing with it. It appears every year there is a new set of rules, windows, or requirements to contend with.

The idea 15 or 20 years ago that a DB with 7 games of playing time and coming off a season-ending injury would transfer UP a level would have been ludicrous.

Last year we had 10 go in the portal with 1 (clark) returning so we'll just say 9. This year we've had 13. Up until the spring window, we had less than last year (8). Robinson, Maier, and Den Johnson aren't reporting any offers and may just be out of football. Dudek would be nice to have assuming Stephens can't come back. No action on Stephens yet, but that may change if he gets that extra year. Hopefully he'd just come back but who knows.

So yeah, a few more this year, but up until the last minute it wasn't even as bad as last year. It's going to be a thing every year.

As far as the offers go, I think more recruiting sites would tell you that unless you have huge NIL coffers, you have to offer a lot of guys to get a few. Things move so quickly with the portal you have to move on to the next guy immediately. These guys are making decisions much faster in the portal than with traditional recruiting. Not a lot of time to build a relationship like in the HS ranks. Plus, didn't Furman bring in like 8 guys from the portal to this point? That matched the number of guys leaving via the portal until the spring window. I'm guessing things aren't done yet. I would imagine Furman is hopefully going to at least bring in a few more DBs and a defensive lineman, so that should mostly make up for the portal losses. I guess we'll see though.

Confirmed.

This is a BIG loss for the Bears. Interesting that WCU’s Cole Gonazales, coming off a serious hip injury suffered in their ‘24 loss to Mercer, transferred to Oklahoma in late December, then transferred to Pittsburgh, where his former WCU, Kade Bell (Kerwin’s son), is the OC, about a week ago… and now Newbauer is essentially filling that roster spot.

Agree with you and Jackal - Moson and Hinton are the two that I think we really wish had not gone. Rest... there were either reasons or they were depth guys or whatever. Our portal additions were strong. Especially the two from Wake and the TE. Recruiting class was strong. Net Net, probably a plus.

Not a take either way. Just for comparison:

2024 breakdown

28 Freshmen
29 Redshirt freshmen
3 Sophomores
17 Redshirt sophomores
5 Junior
9 Redshirt juniors
8 Seniors
8 Redshirt seniors
3 Grads

2025: 19 Seniors or older (same as 24), 15 juniors (1 more than 24), 29 sophomores (9 more than 24), 48 freshmen (9 less than 24).

It's not dramatic, but we are a little "older" than last year. Which theoretically should result in overall better play. We don't know how good they are yet, but we are significantly older in the secondary which was a big issue last year. Also, we'll see how well they perform, but I think we're slightly older on the offensive line which will hopefully result in a boost for the run game (I don't see how it can be much worse). If the two transfers hit then we should be able to find the 3 best guys for the interior between Brasher, Petit, Lamb, and Luna (maybe O'Dell?).

Still a lot of questions this year like last year, but I am cautiously optimistic we'll be better on the offensive line and secondary. Need the QBs to take a decent jump forward and need to find the guy at NG in addition to OL and secondary questions. I imagine most teams also have similar questions with all the transfer additions and subtractions. So hard to predict anything now with all the movement from the portal. At least in my mind.

Sometimes guys just don't work out. In the past transferring up was not easy. Now it's easy peezy. If a guy is "not good mojo", he's doing everyone a favor. ;)

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
