If we stay healthy through the latter part of season, which we didn’t last year, 1 or 2 losses. This is a very talented, well coached team.

I genuinely think we'll be a team that gets stronger as the season goes on. We, as fans, probably don't need to read too much into early-season results.

at Ole Miss - Loss
CSU - Win
Stetson - Win
at W&M - Loss
Samford - Win
at The Citadel - Win
UTC - Win
WCU - Win
at VMI - Win
Wofford - Win
at ETSU - Win
at Mercer - Loss

I think 10-2 with a top 8 seed is possible with a win at W&M.

Furman lost a bunch but so did the other teams. Furman kept all the coaches and that will keep them at the top of the conference. Undefeated at home, with a few issues on the road. 9-3.

I had not really looked at Mercer's scheduling this year, but it looks rough on the Bears from a road trip perspective. A number of long bus rides in there.

Playing their longest road trip (to VMI) followed by a trip to Tuscaloosa followed by Furman coming to town sounds exhausting.

This is a perspective I tend to have. The whole SoCon is making coaching and/or personnel adjustments. I'll add to it that I think Furman has a shot at being better than we were because we are in the 5th or 6th year of a rising prominance in the FCS. Recruitment has been very good. When we show out on TV and in the playoffs, recruits notice. Basketball success has also put us on people's radar. I think we will begin to see the quality of recruit take us to the next level as long as coaching is stable.

The big question is, will talent alone trump or even match experience? I don't think it will quite. I do think when this year's Fr/So become Jr/Sr they will have surpassed the '23 squad.

This year: 9-3 w losses to the Rebels, and 2 SoCon schools due to an uncharacteristically poor performance by either the Defense or an interception-prone QB. We WONT lose the final game of the regular season again, we WILL go to the playoffs, and we WILL win our first playoff game, whether 1st or 2nd round.

I'll go with 9-3. Unfortunately we are getting Ole Miss with one of their best teams in recent history. I can see a loss with either W&M or CSU and we always seem to have that one game where it looks like we are just going through the motions. Just like Wofford last year. FUATT!!!

I don't think we're losing to W&M.

I think folks underestimate how much better the SoCon is than the CAA.
I hope you are right about the W&M game. They have a veteran group with a 4 year starter at QB and we have virtually a new team with little to no QB game experience.
Again, our team isn't "new." They may not have the level of in-game reps you find ideal, but a number of the projected starters have been at Furman 3-5 years. We may still have one of the oldest lineups in the league.

Trust the coaches to have them ready.
I hear ya Jackal. And hope we win. But 4 year starting QBs are worth more in September than November.

As CCH himself said it’s nice we get 4 full game reps prior to the SoCon. He is saying we will mitigate the learning curve / experience differential the later in the season we get …. We all know it. Younger teams (WOFF last year?) improve more the more the season progresses. Older teams improve but not as much. An older team starts September as an 8 out of 10 and moves to a 9/10 by end of year. A younger team starts as a 6 out of 10 and moves an extra notch to an 8 out of 10 by end of year.

This matters a lot on OL and QB. Good Vegas article noted that the most correlation between covering the spread (exceeding general expectation) in September games was - total returning starters on OL -

Generally agree here.

Losses to Ole Miss. dam they have a nasty team
Loss to William and Mary? Experience at QB unless we can win trenches
Loss to UTC. Again the QB and they have a freak on DL
AND maybe one other. Look we saw Carson Jones crush VMI and then Wofford…. Young QBs need big help and are way up and down. Assuming it’s CJ. He has two starts. If he was in his next year - 14 starts etc_ I’d feel better

That’s the key. OL protection for a new QB. think vmi then Wofford. Huge variance. H u g e

If we can survive new QB variance for 8-4 we have done well.

If Furman wins 7 or fewer, I'll be some level of disappointed.
If Furman wins 8, I'll be content.
If Furman wins 9 or more, I'll be very happy.
agree - 8-4 this year (Ole Miss, really 8-3) show we are bringing in guys who can keep the program going. 8-3 FCS and a probable playoff bid would be nice in a year where we are picked to be a little lower... Also, I agree with whomever said if we can show 8-3 FCS this year .. that looks good for the future when we are a little older with these same guys on the OL etc. If we went 8-4 this year I would be very excited for next year. A little depending on what , who and how the losses are. QB volatility etc. OL improvement... If we do see quality depth evident for next year and young guys stepping up I will be quite encouraged

Just curious; not judging. Why, other than being in Macon, do you think Mercer will defeat Furman this season?
What’s the saying, “the SoCon gonna SoCon?”

Just a hunch by looking at the schedule that it appears to be a trap game like Wofford last year. Might be a hard fought win the week prior at ETSU, Mercer could be gelling under the new coach, and Furman could be shallow if any injuries happen.

Good logic.

FUBeAR just has no idea how Mercer is gonna be.

- New Coach, but very successful at a place where Coaches have been successful and then gone on to D1 success.
- Lots of lost talent to graduation (very few via portal; unusually low with their Coaching change), but a strong nucleus of kids that played a lot (similar to Furman’s situation).
- Interesting, could be very significant, portal gains (or busts, of course).
- Also, like FU, somewhat unknown at QB, but TOTALLY unknown at Mercer.

The Bears could be really good, really bad, or somewhere in between… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

We’ll get a pretty good idea when they are @ Chattanooga on 9/14 in Game 3.

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
