I said before the season that FU and FSU were a lot alike. Both lost a lot of players and both still had high expectations and both started the season highly ranked. FSU fell to 0-2 tonight after being double digit favorites in their first 2 games. Hoping FU does not follow suit Saturday night. Beat the Bucs.

Watched some of their game this morning.

The QB, McCoy, is a grad transfer from Sacred Heart. I believe he's in his 6th season of eligibility.

They run a lot from the pistol formation. They ask the QB to make a lot of reads with option and RPO game. The ball is out quick. Pretty clear the offense really runs through McCoy.

They won't be a push over. Early season Big South opponents have, from time to time, given Furman fits. We struggled against them on the road a few years ago. We're going to have to play a lot better than we did last night.
Jackal. Where did you watch their game. I can’t get the odd YouTube to play?

Please give me a URL link to click sir. I would very much like to watch some
ESPN app.
Thank you !

Good analysis @fuwolfpacker

Look, El Cid was 0-11 last year folks. They did not score more than 2 TD in a game all year.

I think we can hit some big throws. I think we can run on them. I think they will struggle to run against us and I think we know who we are in the back and will manage for it.

I don't think this game is a rout but I don't see this as being especially close.

CSU played even with an ok to poor SoCon team. Have a SIXTH year QB.

And got a help practice game. Honestly the ole miss game was such a waxing that it appears we played a lot of guys and I’m not sure how much you learn at that type game. Hanging around the Gamecocks for a half or whomever yea you learn. Out of it from 10 minutes in is not the same. Not being negative just it’s a different thing. Not sure you get as much to learn from… “I tried to stay with WR . I just couldn’t”. You can’t learn speed. As opposed to “if you kick this block to the right on Clemson we probably get 7 yards”

Be interested to hear others who played etc. Of course that may be the most semi-pro team we have ever played. EVER. As opposed to a USC or NC State or whomever that we may have beat or stayed close in some years. Do you think we gain much learning like blocking techniques etc from playing Ole Miss ? I just wonder because I think the players might learn more this week vs a CSU. - “here’s how you could have blocked better to help our RB spring for more yards. Or what to do to handle their blitz of CSU”.
Versus. - and I mean no offense - “ that swim move was basically a Dallas Cowboy that I may never be able to handle (just shoved me away physically) so let’s just work on our standard techniques as we did in summer practice “. THOUGHTS ?

So I watched the Citadel vs CSU game. Watch the final two minutes. In clutch time the CSU qb is throwing freakin DARTS. Citadel was lucky to hang on. That QB in his SIXTH YEAR was picking them apart… easily. Say what you will about his prior years he looked good Saturday. Similar to Leggette WR at USC people said last year after KILLING us “ thats not the norm…”. Maybe it’s the NEW NORM. And it was. He hadn’t excelled prior. But he did from then on!!

Guys grow and change. Maybe this QB has changed. He TORE THE CITADEL APART. he and two WRs almost beat Citadel - Rhone? (Coastal transfer) and Jennings maybe. Those dudes are gonna be a handful. We better get to the QB !

Also hope we can run and play keep away One thing CSU allowed were numerous passes by Citadel to the flat for 7 yards. We should probably go after that. They looked fairly easy and standard. Go route not there? Hit the guy in the flat for 7 yards

Hasn’t been mentioned that I recall but we are really going to miss Dominic Roberto this year. Out biggest RB is at least 30 pounds lighter than Roberto.

From most reports, we are arguably deeper and more explosive at RB than last season.

I didn't see this mentioned anywhere, but maybe I missed it. From best I can tell, Furman started a true freshman long snapper (Riley Smith) at Ole Miss. I don't remember any really bad snaps. Maybe a low one or two, but honestly there were so many punt snaps I couldn't keep track. Kudos to that kid for doing a good job as a true freshman against an SEC team.

Snapper is one of those positions that is rarely appreciated. We were spoiled with Ashby, but from what I could find Smith was a highly regarded snapper prospect. Rubio rated him 4.5 stars (freshman FCS starter or PWO at FBS school). Furman has been pretty good at finding specialist. Bleekrode (?) ended up at Nebraska, Early went to UNC, Williams came from NC State, Ashby went to Vanderbilt, and Leavy went to Duke. We don't always win the special teams part of a game, but it feels like we win there way more than we lose.

If you look at the Citadel/CSU game, special teams is what decided that game. CSU missed two FGs including the one as time expired. Just something to watch this week and going forward.

Maybe but do we have anyone that can get a yard or two on their own like Roberto could?

Was thinking today that when I go to the game Saturday I am going to need a roster for the first time in 2 years. Last year pretty much knew all the names and numbers for the 2 deep on both sides of the ball. This year I might know the numbers and names of 5-6 players and that might be pushing it. Of course that will change as the year unfolds. Just feels odd. What a difference a year makes. At least we have a 2 deep this week.

Any more scouting. Convince me we will win because of X and Y. What should work for our O ? More importantly for a lower level FCS these boys threw for 20/25 v Citadel for almost 300 yards. How can we do better? If that stat holds I fear we lost.

Do you really think we can get to the QB? I could see that based on a few sacks at Ole Miss

What I specifically worry about is the Citadel prospered a good bit on QB runs. 15 runs for 55 yards. Might not sound like a lot but many 5/6 yard scampers. A true dual threat that burned the CSU and adds an element we don’t have this year. CSU often seemed better prepared to stop basic runs by the RB on a handoff. This is my real concern.

Where is the two deep ??? Mine still says Ole Miss when I go to Furmanpaladins.com / sports / football / schedule … and then “more +” and mine still lists the Furman v Ole Miss game notes ??????
