All this fretting is a waste of time. We knew we were going to lose a lot of players off this year's team. The cupboard is hardly bare and I feel confident that there are a lot of young players that have a lot of talent. It's time to give them a shot.

Every player that has entered the portal has been at Furman 4+ years and has earned the right to explore other options. Especially a potential grad student whose major is not included in any of the grad programs at Furman. It doesn't mean they don't like Furman. And as already mentioned just because someone is in the portal does not necessarily mean they won't change their mind.

I look at it this way. In the past, many of our players would have already graduated and moved on. I am grateful for the extra year, or two, of watching these great young men give it all to Furman University. Go Paladins!
Right. It wasn't that long ago, but well before the transfer portal, that Furman athletes with remaining eligibility would leave for the business world as soon as they had that golden ticket of a Furman diploma.

And again, Furman is also going to be active here as well.

Furman has shown it is an attractive landing spot for transfer players. We had a number of key contributors on this year's roster whose names we did not even know this time last year.

Yes, Furman is going to lose a few contributors. They are going to pick up some as well.

I've always thought we were going to be targeting a TE in the portal, so I started doing some snooping. I won't post the names because who knows who we're actually targeting, but if you look at who Coach Verna started following recently, there are several transfer TEs. I think 1-2 are even followed by Coach Hendrix which is probably a pretty good indicator of our interests.

Let's say there was no portal, and 40 plus guys are recognized on senior day. They are graduating and moving on with or without remaining eligibility. What's the problem? They got their degree and football provided the means to do that.
Let’s see if FUBeAR can provide a sense of why some are in their feels over some of the portalings….

We fans represent good wives to 40 husbands. We are true and faithful wives and have supported our 40 husbands as they’ve all manned a large whaling schooner. These 40 husbands have also been true and faithful and very successful in their pursuit of whales. We wives have been thrilled to watch them bring home catch after catch of their intended targets. It’s just been beautiful times for several years. From our wedding nights until this week, these husbands have been wonderful, true, and faithful keeping us wives satisfied on all fronts (nugde, nudge, wink, wink, say no more).

Then, one day this week, they came home, but they have passed through a mysterious fog on the way in…and somehow this fog changed them. All 40 say they are done with whaling. They’re hanging up their harpoons AND they no longer are able to satisfy us wives (nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more). Medical specialists come and diagnose that all 40 husbands have contracted noeligibilitus graduititia nomorewhalingitis as they passed through that mysterious fog. This malady forces husbands to give up their whaling careers and become doctors, lawyers, and business executives instead, while rendering them no longer able to satisfy (nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more) their current wives. As good wives, we appreciate that our good husbands are pursuing new careers, but we are sad about them, through no fault of their own, no longer being able to tend to our wifely needs and desires (nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more).

NOW…CHANGE PARAGRAPH 2 OF OUR SAD TALE…

Then, one day this week, the 40 husbands come home. The 40 husbands do NOT pass thru a mysterious fog on the way back home that, thusly, does not transmit to them a career-changing, impotence-inducing illness. Instead, they just sit down to dinner. Then, they tell us, thanks, but, they will no longer be tending to our wifely needs (nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more). Next, they show us the new Tinder account they’ve just created for themselves along with all of the hot and hotter potential wives that have already swiped right on their page and they ask us what we think about their Tinder page and their new potential paramours. We good wives are not sad. We are likely quite mad.

See the “problem?”

Again…just to be clear FUBeAR don’t care … go get you some sexy new thang … that’s cool. FUBeAR still loves you, but he ain’t wanna watch. FUBeAR just authored this little parable to help ‘splain how some might feel. FUBeAR always knew he had an ‘open relationship’ with these “husbands.”

Make sense?

Everyone should probably simmer down a bit. It is possible that both of these things can be true:

1. We will have growing pains and be frustrated at times as fans early in the/all year. Maybe we aren’t as good as this year. (Realist/Negative)

2. The guys who will be starters next year could be really good players who make big strides this off season to the point where we don’t see as much drop off as we think. (Optimist/Positive)

It’s possible we can both struggle early in the year where I’m sure certain posters will want to “dunk” on more optimistic posters, AND it’s possible that those same players get significantly better as the year goes on as they get more reps and we still find ourselves with a shot at a title/playoffs next year.

There is a lot of uncertainty with next year’s team. That not something we’ve had to deal with in a few years and I’m sure that worries some people because of how long it took us to get back to this point. I get it. Positive Pollys should be able to understand that perspective. Likewise, Negative Nancys should be able to see the perspective that some posters are more inclined to trust the coaches and their evaluation of the returning guys BECAUSE Clay has been able to get us back to this point when there were a lot of years where it looked like we would never get back to this point. Both perspectives have validity.

There is still such a long way to go in all of this. More guys could, likely will, go into the portal, but we’re likely to get a few as well. Would we have been as good this year without Pline, Cook, or Norman? Probably not. Yes, we’re losing some great players, but we’re likely going to get a few good ones as well. Everyone should probably just let things play out and then we can determine how much we need to worry/be excited.

Just my opinion. I’ve probably irritated both sides at this point 🤷‍♂️.
AGREE 100%, both 2022 and 2023 were awesome years of 10-3... and 7-1 in the conference.

What is great is that 7-1 in 2023 got us an outright SoCon championship !

I suspect (depends greatly on portal at all schools) we are a 7 or 8 win team next year. Just my take. I don't know yet who leaves from each school

Free ‘Covid years’ should be flushed almost entirely out of the system before the ‘26 Season…

Enroll 2020 Season - Covid Year - Doesn’t count - Clock didn’t start
2021 Season - Year 1 - maybe redshirt - Season 0
2022 Season - Year 2 - Season 1
2023 Season - Year 3 - Season 2
2024 Season - Year 4 - Season 3
2025 Season - Year 5 - Season 4

That said…a few Medical Redshirts (actually “medical waivers”) could have some Covid-eligibility-augmented peeps playing in 2026 on the “7 year plan”

So…by 2027…finding a Player using a “Covid year” will be rarer than hen’s teeth.

None whatsoever! I recommend an emergency psych evaluation before you somehow hurt yourself. (Kind of entertaining though)

I guess I am of the mindset that these players owe us nothing and owe the university nothing at this point… if they can go contribute next year on a bigger stage, more power to them… they’ll still be representing Furman well.
True - up till the last part.

Unless they are wearing a Diamond F on their helmet and wearing purple and white, while playing for a College Football Team, they ARE NOT representing Furman. They are representing the College Team they preferred to and have chosen to play for in that season. Even those that don’t prefer to pursue one of the graduate studies options available at Furman have made a choice. All of those things may be the exactly right and correct option for them, but it is still a choice: their choice (in almost all cases - some may have been ‘encouraged’ to leave, perhaps).

Ain’t mad at ‘em. They should do exactly what is best for them, but FUBeAR don’t wanna watch ‘em if they ain’t playin’ for the Paladins…and if we, by chance, line up against ‘em, FUBeAR would hope they don’t pee a drop against our Paladins.

Now - if they move on from College Football to an (Admitted / Acknowledged) Professional level of Football, playing for a Team that Furman would NEVER play AND they choose to represent Furman by how their College Experience is depicted online, in the program, on TV, in their introductions, etc., then FUBeAR is ALL IN supporting them as they ARE, again, representing Furman at that point.

And, if they choose to join the FFPA and attend FFPA Tailgates and Events and Furman games, after representing a different college football team for a year or 2, they are more than welcome to do so. They are Furman Football Alumni just as much as any other former Player that didn’t go play somewhere else. FUATT
