Evidence that the coaching staff doesn’t feel like being a year older will automatically make you better like many on here believe. Just sayin’
I'm not sure that's the end analysis.

1. Furman is still going to be comparatively young in the defensive backfield. Moson, Lewis, Dalton, and Coleman are all going to be sophomores, for instance.

2. We need to continue to build depth in the defensive backfield. We were decimated by injuries back there this year and we largely ran out of bodies.

3. Furman has lost some guys in the transfer portal or who have fallen off the roster for whatever reason. Those are essentially unexpected scholarship spots that Furman may decide are better suited to be used elsewhere. Maybe our coaches prefer to replace a linebacker with a defensive back on the roster.

Honestly, defensive backs and defensive linemen are two areas at the FCS level where you go get as many good players as you can find.

Jackal you are using logic with AP when you know he always thinks all our players are terrible. Actually his negative opinions extend to all our players, coaches, administrators, facilities, parking attendants and ticketing systems.

Boys boys. I’ll back AP on one thing here. And since I don’t say as much I think you will respect it.

Twice I’ve had a parking pass for football and not been able to park where I paid for. The gate attendant was confused. Not a huge deal but the attendants weren’t prepared and sent me elsewhere

Taking some stock in the new year.

A lot of the reported offers at various positions have found new homes. It seems we are still active in the portal at DB and OL.

We don't seem super active at RB, even after losing 3 guys. I'm wondering if that seems to indicate the coaches believe Jayquan Smith will be a full return this fall, which is sort of like gaining a talented transfer running back.

I also noticed that Santonio Varvel is listed as a true freshman. My suspicion is that he would have been awarded a medical redshirt or something that allowed him to reclassify without being redshirted. That may benefit Furman a bit because they added a transfer WR and can essentially add Varvel to their '25 class, where we missed out on a late flip in recruiting.

I suppose it is anyone's guess what we do in spring recruiting. The recruiting calendar is a much different animal this year.

I think FUATT may have let the cat out of the bag to a point. In one of his earlier posts, it read like we already have our guy at RB just like we have or possibly have an OL as well. Might be why it seems a little quiet/slow there. I'll have to find the post to make sure.

Edit: This is what I was referencing... "I think the portal has been kind to Furman. We have addressed some needs at WR, TE (Clyburn, we needed a big bodied blocking TE), RB. I think that Santa has a present hiding for us behind the tree at OT. A nice one. Not the VMI kid but something someone mentioned earlier.
"
To me, that reads like we got some one at WR (King), TE (Clyburn), and RB (yet to be announced). Also sounds like the OL was close to a done deal if not a done deal already. Obviously we'll see if that's true or not but that's how I read it.

Also, it is the dead period so there really shouldn't be a lot going on until tomorrow I think? I think that's when the dead period ends but don't want to look it up again.

The Varvel thing is interesting. He was one of the first guys to be announced out for the year, and I imagine he has a pretty easy case for a medical redshirt. It's been a while since I looked, but I'm 99% sure he was a track guy in high school as well. If he can come back from his ACL with that speed he had in high school, he might be able to help on the outside. Furman needs to find that bigger faster guy on the outside. We have outside receivers but that haven't developed into that guy yet. So, I would imagine there is an opportunity for someone to go win that.

Another RB makes sense, especially with Smith coming off a significant injury. Going into 2025, we have really only two guys at that position that have logged any significant time (Smith and Hall).

I'm sure Nettles will be given a look in the pre-season camps to earn some carries.

I'm also interested to see the continued development of Jalil Garvin-Mingo and Kevin Everheart.

Garvin-Mingo looks like he was out this season, but did log some playing time on the 2023 team. This is not scientific, but if a freshman saw the field on that team in any capacity, the coaches must have seen some potential there.

I loved Everheart's high school film. He's got that short stocky quick bowling ball type runner's build. He was credited with four games this year, so perhaps we'll see him continue to develop into a useful player going forward.

I think we are rolling into the Spring with what we have (at OL anyway). What’s our history of adding in the Summer/Fall?

King was the WR. Clyburn the TE. RB... I might be wrong there. I think we want one but may not land one. We are ok with Smith, Hall and Nettles but would like one more guy. Nettles really needs a year in the weight room but could see him in 3rd down and some packages.

King is from ECU and I think maybe he was a Dudzik recruit there. Jackal was right, he had an ACL but... he was gonna play. I think we will be very happy on King.

I think we have the OL in the barn but we live in crazy town now and just because something is supposed to happen doesn't mean it will I guess. But let's say, hypothetically, that if you are a grad transfer you might not have to enroll until Spring term. Maybe. Honestly not sure how that works.

Typically, the only time we've really added transfers was over the summer. The rules changed a bit on that this year.

The OL is probably fine. We'll essentially return the entire two deep with the exception of Blake Hundley (graduated) and Brody Balliew (transferred). Those two were the depth chart at RT.

While we didn't get a ton of production out of RB in 2024, I would think that with a lot of the depth chart transferring/graduating and one player coming back off an injury, we'd look to add at that spot.

Based on the last couple of years, I would not feel ok with where we are at RB unless the coaches REALLY like one of the walk ons and have already seen enough from Smith to feel like he’s going to be fully ready to go in the fall. I like Nettles and feel like he’ll be good, but I’d be surprised if he contributed much more than a few change of pace series unless he’s forced to play more. Going into next year with only 3 scholarship RBs (guys announced as signed by the Furman for the sake of that discussion) with one not playing in almost 2 years and one being a true freshman would be a touch concerning. At least it would be for me given that we had to go to RB4 last year and had at least 3-4 guys banged up the year before.

The coaches know what they have and probably want to win more than any of us since their paychecks depend on it, so I’d have to trust them with if they didn’t think they needed another guy. Would certainly make me feel better about the position if they could add another guy with some experience.
