Also, of interest, rumor is that Clemson might be interested in beaming up the Citadel Punter. He helped keep them in the game against us and I'd be happy to see him in Orange. He led the SoCon in punting and he averaged 47.3 against us with 2 inside the 20 and a long of 65. Good riddance if he goes.
We play Clempson next year so would still see him.

Sorta portal..

Sources: Appalachian State is firing coach Shawn Clark. App State finished this season 5-6 and is 40-24 in six years.

Dartmouth RB Q Jones offered

Offers from Lamar, Campbell, ETSU, Bryant, NAU, and Robert Morris. Likely comes a result of Hicks leaving.

…or…was a catalyst for his departure. Causal relationships are always difficult to assess.

Still need at least one fullback type. Roberto type that doesn’t go down easily.
If we're mostly going to be an outside zone run team, then guys who are best suited for north-south run games aren't at a premium. I'm not sure that was Hicks forte. Roberto was probably really under appreciated. He had the speed and enough shiftiness to run some of that but could still bang around inside the tackles. But I do agree that our RBs did not do a great job of making the first guy miss. Honestly, I think that's at least part of the reason why we saw a lot more 0-3 yard runs instead of 5-8 yard runs. There were failures all around in the run game, but sometimes we had it blocked up well and the RB didn't take care of the one guy he was responsible for in that outside zone run scheme (if I understand the concept correctly).

As far as a fullback goes, I believe Furman has mostly used someone like Jeremiah Jackson when we've gone to that look. I know Hicks blocked some in two back formations, but I think we spend the majority of our time in a single back look now.

Jeremiah Jackson wasn't a fullba.....

Tracking with my current hypothesis, Jones is listed at 5'11 195. Not small, but more in line with the smaller zone runners Furman seems to be targeting.

Hopefully he comes back full speed, but don't forget how fast and physical Jayquan Smith is. He backed up Roberto and missed this season, but he almost assuredly would have been the primary dude in 2024.

A healthy Smith is a big bruising runner. I do not necessarily believe we need a more traditional fullback, because a lot of those roles can be accomplished by other guys on the roster (DTs, TEs, etc.)

I thought of Smith as more of a Devin Wynn-type back - has speed, great balance, and can drill your A$$!

I don't think we are going to see fullback in the traditional sense at Furman under this offensive staff.

Jayqan I hope is healthy. He should be about 210 and able to run the middle. Bell cow. Hall is 190. Nettles will initially be more of a 3rd down guy I think because (I met him in airport) he looks about 180 soaking wet.

We are going to be a lot of 11 and 12 I think given our riches at TE and WR. Run a lot of OZ and stretch concepts, attack the perimeter, throw TE over the middle and y stick type stuff mixed in with a lot of IZ/power/duo. Attack every blade kind of offense.

I think a healthy Jayquan would be a nice boost for the run game. The line and the QB decision making both still have to improve, but I think Smith gives us that nice mix of speed and size to make guys miss more often.

I don't have the knowledge to do the charting for this, but I would be interested in how often we were in 11 vs 12 personnel, and what were the efficiency/effectiveness rates out of those groupings. My first thought was we were likely in 11 most of the time but with 12 personnel. I don't remember Burrell or Pryor/Tormey on the line very much. Most of the time they were split out with the WR's I think. Either way, I feel like a lot of the big plays I remember seeing were when we had 2 TE's on the field but I might just be making that up in my mind.

Probably a good point in time to remind everyone that entry into the portal is not necessarily goodbye.

As you may recall, we've had some key guys enter into the portal and then return for the next year (Luke Clark and Travis Blackshear come to mind).
