Well ... at least Georgia Southern is doing better than UMass, 19-81 overall since moving to FBS in 2013. Looks like Georgia Southern is 53-47 overall since moving to FBS in 2014. (Also ... for those who may wish to be reminded, Furman is 41-47 overall from 2014 - 2021 and 49 - 53 overall from 2013 - 2021.)

[Note: 9 of these schools are in states that are SoCon states or in states adjacent to SoCon states 2 of the 3 schools listed in the second sentence are in SoCon states I am not sure that there are not additional departures from FCS to FBS since the writing of the article other than Sam Houston State, Jacksonville State, and James Madison.]

The FCS has seen three more programs depart for the FBS recently. James Madison is joining the Sun Belt in 2022, and Sam Houston and Jacksonville State are joining C-USA in 2023.

It’s a mixed bag when looking at records of these 12 teams since they became FBS programs. Some have struggled mightily. Some have found success but endured down years in the process.

Here are the 12 teams that have jumped to the FBS since 2008 and their records as FBS programs for each season.

Western Kentucky
WKU competed in the FCS from 1978-2007. Its last FCS conference was the Gateway Football Conference, which is now the MVFC. WKU was in the Sun Belt Conference from 2009-2014 and then joined Conference USA.

Liberty
Liberty played in the FCS from 1989–2017 with its last 15 years spent in the Big South Conference. The Flames became a provisional FBS member in 2018 and became a full FBS member with bowl eligibility in 2019. They play as an independent.

Wow. This is quite interesting.

Scott Frost should be sending at least $600,000 of his $15 million buyout to Georgia Southern (to add to the $1,423,000 Nebraska already paid Georgia Southern to come to Lincoln to play); and he also should be dividing up at least another $800,000 among the 4 offensive assistants that he fired after last season. (See below in red.)

This is amazing that if they had waited 3 more weeks and then fired him, his buyout would have been $7.50 million less.

I guess the AD was afraid that Nebraska had too much of a chance to beat #6 Oklahoma next Saturday but then revert to his old ways with a loss to Indiana and/or Rutgers in the following 2 games.

Nebraska fired football coach Scott Frost on Sunday, one day after a 45-42 home loss to Georgia Southern....

Nebraska (1-2) had been a three-touchdown favorite.

Among Big Ten schools, only Rutgers had a worse overall record than the Huskers in their four-plus seasons under Frost.

Frost will receive his full $15 million buyout, Alberts told reporters at a news conference. The buyout amount would have dropped to $7.5 million on Oct. 1. ....

"We owed it to the players ... help this team get over the hump and win some games."

Frost played at Nebraska from 1995 to '97....

Frost seemed like the perfect fit to restore Nebraska to glory after the Huskers fired Mike Riley in 2017. Frost was in his second year as UCF head coach -- and in the middle of a historic 13-0 season in which the Knights self-declared a national championship -- and became one of the hottest coaching candidates in the country. Even though Nebraska had not had sustained success the way it did when he played there, the lure of returning home was impossible to give up.

But from the beginning of his tenure in 2018, Frost was never able to get the Huskers going. Nebraska -- once a perennial bowl team -- never had a winning season under Frost. The most distressing part about watching Nebraska play was the sheer number of close games it lost.

Nebraska is 5-22 (.185) in one-score games since Frost was hired. No other FBS team has more than 16 one-score losses in that span.

Last season, the Huskers went 3-9. Seven of those losses were one-score games. ...

Considering how close it seemed Nebraska was to turning a corner, Alberts made the surprising move last November when he announced he would bring Frost back -- but with the understanding the 2022 season would be make or break.

Frost fired four offensive assistants, had his pay cut from $5 million to $4 million and agreed to having his buyout drop from $15 million to $7.5 million on Oct. 1.

... the 2022 season began the way last season left off -- with a one-score loss to Northwestern in Ireland -- a game that turned on an onside kick call Frost made with Nebraska leading 28-17 in the third quarter. Nebraska did not score again and lost 31-28.

In explaining ... , Frost said, "You can't really foresee them scoring 14 straight and us sputtering after we played well to start the second half on offense. Again, those are excuses...."

It only got worse Saturday against Georgia Southern, a team Nebraska paid $1.423 million to travel to Lincoln and play. ...

Afterward, Frost said, "... we got beat today. ... I didn't really have an answer. They got after us."

Not exactly the answers Nebraska fans were looking for after five seasons hearing similar statements after every loss.

Frost ends his Nebraska coaching career with a 16-31 mark.

Scott has poured his heart and soul into the Nebraska Football program both as a quarterback and head coach, and I appreciate his work and dedication," Nebraska vice chancellor for athletics Trev Alberts said ....

What about FBS is UMass enjoying?
By the way, Furman has 2,700 students. By comparison, GSU, ASU and CCU have student enrollments of, respectively, 27,000, 21,000, and 10,500. Ex-SoCon Marshall has 12,000.
So Furman is much smaller by comparison. Even Rice (8300) and Tulsa (3700) are bigger than Furman. I am not saying we should or would move up to FBS if we greatly increased in size.
